Memorial

The UDC objective for Memorial was and is to honor the memory of those who served and those who fell in the service of the Confederate states; to preserve, protect and mark the places where Confederate valor made an historic impact and significance.

The UDC Iron Cross marker was patterned after the design on the Southern Cross of Honor pin.  Mrs. Alexander Erwin of Athens, Georgia designed this pin in 1898, to give survivors and families of the deceased soldiers of the Confederacy a medal to honor their services in the War.  Shortly after 1900, this design became a marker for all Confederate soldiers graves.
